Asbestos
Asbestos is a generic name given to six fibrous minerals
that have been used in commercial products. The six types
of asbestos are chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite,
tremolite , and actinolite. Several properties that make asbestos
so versatile and cost effective are high tensile strength,
chemical and thermal stability, high flexibility, low electrical
conductivity, and large surface area. The leading domestic
markets are roofing products, gaskets, and friction products.
Significant amounts of white chrysotile asbestos has been
widely used since the 1960’s for asbestos cement products
and other similar materials. All forms of asbestos fibre have
been used in building products since the 1930;s and was phased
out in the 1980’s, in the United Kingdom.
